Step 1: Draw the helmet design in flat using Adobe Illustrator.

Step 2: Print out the design and spray mount it to a piece of plywood.

Step 3: Cut out the template using a scroll saw. Children make sure you get an adult to help you out.

Step 4: Glue it together and prime it. Use nuts, bolts or screws to attach all the wood parts to the vinyl. Glue wood to wood parts together using Elmers wood glue. As a primer for the first coat use Golden’s GAC 200 which is a molecular bonding agent, it protects acrylic paint from chipping off vinyl. Then put on 3 to 5 coats of gesso primer.

Step 5: Paint the helmet. Use liquitex acrylic medium viscosity with usually 2 layers.

Step 6: Measure and mark where the holes for the helmet will go. Drill the holes in the Munnys’s head.

Step 7: Screw the helmet to the Munny’s head securely.

Step 8: Paint the rest of the custom toy in the same way you painted the helmet.

Step 9: Finish it! The black lines are drawn with a rapidograph pen.

Wave dog , do you clearcoat these when finished and if so do you have a problem with the rapidograph pens running when clearcoated? Thanks for tutorial very nice job.

yep, i’m also wondered about using the rapidograph-ink. how do u fix it? btw: also thanks for the nice tutorial.
Use a lacquer, varnish or fixative that doesn’t contain acetone so your inks don’t run. I generally use UV-resistant acrylic for most work, but I haven’t tested it on rapidograph inks.
ahh, merci, Justin!! good input, hehe.

Thanks for all the feedback. In order to keep the india ink from running I first spray it litely with Krylon workable fixative then after that dries I spary it with krylon crystalclear. Hope that helps
